I've always said dance is an artistic expression through movement. But it is also a good way to exercise and keep in shape. With the popularity of dancing shows on television, more and more people are getting interested and taking dance for a test drive. Now I have attended several dance classes and recitals as a parent but except for the occasional slow dance with my wife, I don't dance much. All Hail the Fonz. However, my wife and several of her friends attend an aerobic gym where they do dance moves for exercise. They all agree that dancing is a fun way to workout and can be pretty effective. After all, you don't often see an overweight professional dancer.

When choosing dance as a means of staying in shape, you need to decide which dance is best for you. Do you want to lose some excess weight or do you want a little cardiovascular workout? Besides the traditional forms of dance like jazz, ballet, and modern, there are alternative forms, too. Why not try swing, dance aerobics, ballroom dancing, power dancing, and even exotic belly dancing? Each kind of dance has its own benefits. Traditional dance styles will give you some exercise while teaching you actual dance moves. Other forms, such as dance aerobics, may not make a professional out of you but they are great for losing weight and staying healthy.

You might as well do something fun and enjoyable when getting into shape!
