Angela King has always had a passion for dance. At a very young age, she went to the local dance studio every day after school and stayed until they closed. Eventually she became more involved with the studio by assisting the teachers. Her passion continued to thrive when she tried out for and was accepted to the San Francisco 49ers Dancers at age 17.
 
Throughout this creative dancer’s career, Angela was never fond of her dance costume’s fit.  Her constant tailoring inspired her to work for a company that made cheer and dance costumes.  She recognized the vast importance in the industry for beautiful and versatile uniforms.  In order to continue improving the fit of cheer and dance costumes, she made a commitment to offer perfectly-fitting, exquisite costumes by starting her own business in 1989, Angela King Designs (AKD).
 
Today, in addition to working with cheer and dance squads across the country, AKD is the designer for the United National Gridiron League (UNGL) uniforms. Through the UNGL, AKD outfits the Virginia Swarm, Dallas Bluestorm, North Carolina Comets, Ohio Marauders and Miami Scorchers Dancers.
 
In November, 2009 AKD introduced its boot line to provide teams the opportunity for head-to-toe costuming. “Many dance and cheer teams wear great uniforms, but detract from them with their footwear,” King says. “Our boots offer perfectly coordinated footwear to create a total look.
 
For the 2010-2011 season, AKD has designed brand new costumes for each of the UNGL teams, which will be seen when the league kicks off. According to King, the new gear is innovative and fashion-forward. “All our UNGL designs provide each team with a unique identity that separates them from other sports leagues,” King continues. “We use lots of saturated color that makes our costumes bright, striking and eye-catching. We develop all our own house patterns, which are very popular among our clients.”
 
AKD has added GoWildWear.com and Sidelineshoponline.com to her design lines.  King states, “AKD is the only company catering exclusively to pro dance/cheer teams. Our mission is to bring innovative fabrics and designs to these groups.  GoWildWear.com is the shop for anyone looking for the “sport of glamour.’  King also has added Sidelineshoponline.com to her lines, offering cosmetics and gift items, including hair and nail accessories, fragrances and more – all designed for “playing the sport of glamour.”
 
In addition to its AngelaKingDesign.com, Sidelineshoponline.com and GoWild.com divisions, AKD offers the “Costume Lounge,” an email blast reaching almost 1,000 performers, suppliers and others in the professional dance and cheer field to help them keep up with what’s going on in the industry.  King continues to fulfill AKD’s goal for the 20 year old company, by creating innovative items for all ages in the spirit industry.
