As I was looking for topics to write about, I came across an interesting article about the way All Star cheerleaders look. There were pros and cons about the uniforms, hair and make up, so I decided to sit down and add my own two cents.
First, I think all the naysayers need to remember All Star cheerleaders do not cheer for any sports teams. They are strictly competitive and if you will, performers. They are not piling on the glitter make up to stand on the sidelines in the pouring rain. The make up worn by a school cheerleader and an All Star cheerleader are as different as night and day. I am not putting anyone down, but look around you - sometimes the average teen girl walking around the mall has on more eyeliner, eye shadow and lip gloss than an All Star cheerleader.
As for the uniforms, I do not have a problem with tasteful crops and skirts. I have seen itty bitty uniforms that are on the verge of indecency with body parts nearly falling out. This is something the individual coaches & parents need to seriously look at. If you are properly covered, I see no difference between this and a summer outfit our kids may be playing outside in or a tankini swimsuit.
Wearing the hair up in a pony tail or half up / half down keeps it out of the cheerleader’s face. Sometimes it is straight, sometimes curly and sometimes even hair pieces are worn – things my daughter wore when she was a dancer.
While I do understand the concerns some parents have, I do have to say this. Just like a dancer wearing a form-fitting leotard or a theatre group wearing hair pieces and stage make up, All Star cheerleaders are performers. The hair, make up & uniform are all part of the performance. Hopefully the ‘cheer bling’ blinding some doesn’t distract them too much from the big picture. So sit back, grab your bag of popcorn and prepare to be dazzled by some talented kids!
