Cheerleaders at Piedmont Hills High School in San Jose, California will no longer be allowed to wear their uniform skirts to school, due to a clause in the school dress code. Principal Traci Williams has increased enforcement of the dress code, which includes a ban on skirts shorter than mid-thigh level. The school’s cheerleading uniform includes a sleeveless black and white top and matching miniskirt.
The skirts, according to the principal, are too short. The cheerleading team typically wears their matching uniforms to school on game days. Though the school will continue to allow them to cheer in their skirts, the team is not permitted to wear the skirts during the school day. Principal Williams suggested that the cheerleaders could wear their cheer sweat pants under their skirts, to properly cover their legs. The high school cheerleaders refused, citing the 95 degree weather as the reason for their opposition.
The school and the cheerleading team have come to an agreement this week, however, and the girls will wear jeans and their matching tops to school on game days.
